Astana winter: snow, road salt and frost versus your mats
Half a year of snow, salt on the roads and deep frost. How to prepare your interior, and why EVA cells make so much sense here.
An Astana winter tests every car. Snow on your boots melts inside, salty water runs under the mat, and by morning it all turns to ice. Factory carpet mats soak up moisture over a season, smell damp and leave white salt stains.
Where the meltwater goes
On a flat mat water spreads and runs underneath, into the carpet and sound insulation. On EVA it drops into the cells and stays there until you pour it out. On TPE and 5D EVA the edges do the work: water cannot spill over.
- EVA does not absorb water, so it does not freeze through
- Cells hold snow and sand while your soles rest on dry ridges
- The edges of 5D EVA and TPE keep water from getting under the mat
- Salt rinses off with warm water and leaves no stains
Frost
Cheap rubber goes stiff in the cold, cracks and stops lying flat. EVA and TPE stay springy, so the mat does not curl up under the pedals.
Getting through the season
- Every week or two take the mats out and shake the cells
- After a thaw rinse them with warm water, the salt will go
- Don't dry them against a radiator, room temperature is enough
- Check the fixings: the mat under the pedals must not move
«Despite a howling blizzard in Astana, delivery was right on time. The cells are roomy and deep.»
